Are you connected to any channels?

In addition to what mShred said: to join channels once connected to the server try typing in "/JOIN #help" or "/JOIN #hackthissite" or which channel you want (without quotes of course). Usually your IRC client will show you a list of channels you can join. There are articles on the main page on how IRC works, if that's what you want to find out. Then again, it can be quiet on IRC, try talking and see what you get back.

You should join #coffeesh0p too. Keep in mind though that a lot of us around here have full time jobs or are in school full time. So there is some dead time every so often. A majority of us idle when AFK.

Thanks guys, I have craked it! Although I am connected to port 6667 and not 7000. Will this have any bearing on functionality?e

I do work too, it's just I have a lot of spare time :)

Best

Port 7000 is SSL port, useful for secure connection. You can read more here.
For IRC related information of this site, please visit this.
AFAIK ports do not really affect the functionality. :)

There is little value in using SSL currently, as those people not using it, will make a MiTM possible. Then again, it will prevent casual snooping. What I did when first leaning IRC commands and stuff was just to have a text file with the commands, nicks and bots in them.
