I had put off completing this mission for the same reason. I used MDCrack at eljonto's suggestion.

Most people who can't get it to work, don't know you have to run it via the command prompt. In Windows, go to start > run > cmd > cd to where you have installed JTR. Then just type the name of the main .exe file (most people rename it to 'john', in the beginning it is john- and then a couple of numbers I think) and you'll see all the available options.

A good alternative to JTR is a program called Cain (& Abel). You can download it from here:
http://www.oxid.it/cain.html
It has a fancy point-and-click interface, so perhaps it's easier to use for new(er) people.

OK. i did wat u said in the cmd prompt. d options come. I type "john <name of the text file>" as said in the tutorial. A msg comes up saying dat john is not recognised external or internal command, operable program or batch file. Wat do I do?

download john the ripper,
in cmd prompt navigate to where the program is,
then use the command- you'll probably need to add '.exe' to the filename so it looks for the exe rather than interpreting 'john' as a system command

You might be having operating system trouble.

Personally, I had to resort to the following script from timjoh:

timjoh.com/md4-hash-collision-detector-in-perl/ wrote:use Digest::MD4 md4_hex;

my $goal = 'your hash here'; # hash to find
my @chars = ( a..z, 0..9 ); # characters to use
my $minlen = 1; # minimum length of string
my $maxlen = 8; # maximum length of string

for ( $minlen..$maxlen ) {
print 'Length: ', $_, "\n";
&checkStrings($_);
}

sub checkStrings {
my ( $n, $s ) = ( (shift) - 1, shift );
for ( @chars ) {
if ( $n ) {
checkStrings($n, $s . $_ );
} else {
print $s, $_, "\n" if md4_hex( $s . $_ ) eq $goal;
}
}
}

I thought that this was worth re-posting here since he's implemented this rather succinctly in perl. The trick for me to getting it to run was to apply the libdigest-md4-perl patch to my debian system. My laptop got it in less than ten minutes.

Thanks timjoh!!

([msg=25024]see Re: Please ask questions ONLY in this topic.[/msg])

I have finished this mission but I have a problem.
I know a file name *********. I downloaded a hash file in it. Open this file, I know a hash in admin... file is ***.
But i don't know how to find *********
I think this question is not spoiler Yes, it was, in future don't mention specific file names or data which explicitly gives people the information they need to find out
Sorry: my English is not good

Once you have the hash and start to crack it it shouldnt take long at all if you are doing it correctly. Rainbow tables really are not needed. A simple brute force crack will work in no time because the password is not long.

Ok, I have the hash file and the charset but cant find the actual hash... ive read through the file well over 20 times and still cant find anything. any tips on finding it?

By hash file i mean the file downloaded when you open the hash directory. i opened it with notepad but cant find anything useful :x

Thanks, turned out i was in the wrong directory :oops:

I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say you have the hash file....but no hash :? I guess a hint of sorts would be to think 'basics 1,3 & 8' which should lead you somewhere to an 'error matching' message.
