The Internet

The internet is one of our greatest achievements. It connects millions of computers world-wide,and all of the worlds knowledge is accessable - If you know where to look. But my question to you all is this: Do you believe the internet is "Right", both Ethically, and Morally. The internet was once a safe haven from censorship. Freedom from control. But now, everyuthing is controlled and regulated. My ISP could very well be looking at my traffic, as the word "Hack" in a web site address could set off a red light. And, our Social Security, Medical, Criminal, and Educational records are all all file. Not to mention that terrabytes and terrabytes of pornography...

So, is this infrastructure called the "Internet" Right?

And. . .? It's a fact of life, like diseases and annoying people.

Why do you say terabytes and terabytes of pornography like a bad thing? :(

That's bound to get worse in the future, if people aren't careful.

To quote Schneier
Beware the Four Horsemen of the Information Apocalypse: terrorists, drug dealers, kidnappers, and child pornographers. Seems like you can scare any public into allowing the government to do anything with those four.

That will probably happen someday soon...or at least they'll TRY to make it happen. I think there's quite a bit to be said for groups that have formed on the internet against actions like these (such as the successful retaliation against RealID), and even if new regulations are someday passed I'm sure there will be a way to skirt these. Most of the public, unaware, however, will believe officials in law and politics that some 'new law' will be strictly applied to pedophiles or some other group.

A good test bed is going to be Australia come here in a year or so.

Just because your ISP can look at your traffic (big suprise, amirite) doesn't mean the Internet is now corrupted and no longer viable. ISPs have ALWAYS been able to monitor traffic - after all, they're the ones providing it.

"The internet was once a safe haven for censorship".

The ARPAnet was designed by the military. It wasn't meant for anything like that.

Also, what's wrong with pornography? By the way: It's at least petabytes of pornography; not terabytes.

I also don't understand how you are trying to map the morality of the internet. The Internet was designed for communication, and that's what it's doing now. You can't just categorize the Internet as "right" or "wrong". It simply is.

Indeed. The OP is taking a jumbled mess of wires (essentially all the internet really is) and asking if it's moral ............. that just sounds retarded to me. In the end, it's just a lifeless pile of wires.

hi all, couldnt find any other way to put this up....theres a site or rather a video that constantly pops up on facebook, its a video about a girl committing suicide in front of a camera, it pastes itself onto peoples pages and I just know its just a shit way for the owners of the website that hosts the video to get attention. I know theres no actual suicide, but its a disgusting way to get attention. Im sure someone could give them some attention by helping me never see this video pop up ever again :)
