Opinions on LOIC

I've heard good and bad about LOIC.
What are your opinions?
I saw a post from a ways back asking for help in the New Zealand DDoS attacks.
They had a link and everything to the anonomyous IRC for operation payback...
They linked to sourceforge so people could help wit the DDoS.
I figure if it's in large numbers of people attacking and you're using an IP hiding software.
You're good.
But if you're planning on one alone, you'd have to be retarded or using some crazy home crafted junk....

I think it's just another tool for script kiddies to use

What would be a good place to learn and understand how it works?

I dont think it's wrong to use these programs.
As long as you know whats happening, and whats behind that button you're pushing.
I dont see anything wrong with that.

Wikipedia and Google are good starts.

I agree with you mostly on that. If you know what's going on, it's good. And if you know code well enough to write your own program to do it for you, you're pretty set. But for things where you just need a quick pentest, skiddie tools tend to be pretty helpful.

What would be the most efficient "attack?"

An ICMP Flood or a SYN flood?

Some people say you can ping a computer to death.
Wouldnt that take a few users and alot of time? lol

I dont know code enough yet to make my own program for a DoS.
I do know that the SYN works by sending a bunch of TCP/SYN packets and waiting for a connection.
Obviously it never comes because the senders address is fake.

How does an ICMP flood work though?
I know it sends fragments of an IP and makes it impossible for the host to respond to legit packets/requests... right?

If I were to write a program, I would have to make it send a bunch of TCP/SYN packets to a user until I say stop right?

LOIC is an excellent hacker tool, perhaps even as good as sub7. I use it for pretty much anyone I want to hack. I usually just social engineer them into giving me their IP address (I tell them the name of their dog and then threaten to kill it unless they reveal it) and then flood them with death pings. It works pretty well.

The first rule of death pings is that you do not talk about death pings.
