This is quite a difficult question to answer. As today, we see a lot of great cryptocurrencies are on the rise. Many crypto currencies are competing and gaining the trust of market. Some of these are Ripple, Ethereum, IOTA, and more.

As bitcoin is fluctuating too much these days, and most of the crypto enthusiast are focused on only bitcoin, when it comes to mining. Mining other crypto currencies can be a good step for long term investment in crypto. For example I found this guide which explains mining ripple and how it can be done.
