I want to learn programming HELP!

We see this a lot around here. New users are constantly asking what language should they learn to get started and what languages would best fit a given situation. Ninjex brought up an old article that can help you out with this if you are asking yourself where you should start (or move to next).

https://www.hackthissite.org/articles/read/1038

As a follow up, I'd like all future discussions/suggestions on this topic to take place in this thread.
What do you suggest?
Why?
Discuss.

I like the premise of this thread.

So, I'd like to start learning C, but I don't have any resources. Do you have any recommendations?

The tried and true method to learn C, and learn it well, is to read K&R.

Head First JavaScript is pretty good. I can help. I'm also pretty fluent in my JS abilities, so you can come to me with questions as well. There's an application for Macs that supports a wide range of programming languages called Sublime Text 2 that I use for writing codes. It should be on App Store.

SoftShell you should try out codecademy.com, they give you examples and they let you write out the code you learn, and they help explain it too. Also theres alot of other languages like php, python, and ruby that you can learn on the site as well.

   Just know that, at least in my experience, anything that tries to use the Shell Engine for coding doesn't work. It sucks, it's slow, they make you pay tons of money for user submissions, and the engine doesn't work for the code.

You can check out codecademy, it's free. Or you can try to find a course on udemy. It can be helpful.

Hi,
First thing you need to do is to download a IDE(Integrated Developing Environment) for Java, I can recommend NetBeans and Eclipse
https://netbeans.org/downloads/
https://eclipse.org/downloads/

So download and then chose the IDE that feels more user friendly to you.
Eclipse:

NetBeans(The videos are kinda old but explains, so ignore what it says about versions):
