What's a good cheap Vinyl Printer/Cutter?

I came across the Cricut for $300 the other day in the craft shop, but it seems that only their pre-made designs can be cut. I thought it would be an amazing item to own and maybe even make side cash with with my graphic design experience (and programs), but could it do custom? If not, is anyone suggesting one that can?
