How do I get rid of a RAT?

Post by warnock on Mon Aug 23, 2010 2:16 am
([msg=44115]see How do I get rid of a RAT?[/msg])

The title says it all.

Turns out I've had a RAT on my comp for quite some time.

Is there any way to get rid of these things?
I've restored my computer to factory settings once, and it didn't seem to take.

And can anyone provide me with useful information on how to avoid being infected by these in the future? I don't open strange E-mails, so I'm at a loss on trying to figure out how I got it in the 1st place.

How do you know you have one?

Yeah if the HDD was wiped clean and the OS installed over it then the RAT should have been removed. Maybe your mistaken about the problem. Discuss it more in depth

I was doing some research about them and stumbled across this:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 32947.aspx

So far, I know my skiddies have the ability to Control my mouse remotely, They know all of my passwords, and they respond outside of my apartment to conversations I have inside that they should have no way of hearing (listening through the microphones?).

I'd go into more detail....but you'd probably understand why I hesitate at the moment.

I'm honestly not sure whether or not I have a RAT, it's just an assumption. A RAT would account for most of the power they seem to have over my computer and network.

The laptop was restored to factory settings, but I didn't change my online habits if this helps (kept same E-mail addresses, etc).

I guess there's a chance It was removed, and I somehow got it again. I feel like I'm stumbling around possibly into traps, this is why I'd like to know how to avoid these things.

Also in at least one instance they broke into my apartment. So they did have direct access to my computer.

Once I got wise I established some home security.

If it keeps happening, it's more than likely that your router got pwnt. My dad, against my advice, did not put a password on his. Sure enough, the damn Russkies found it and gave him their own special DNS. Anything searched through Google brought up gambling sites and porn.

what have you got on your computer that was important enough for people to listen in on your conversations and break in to your house for? seems you've got bigger problems than a RAT.
