Can someone help me understand how a remote key-logger is even able to access another computer?

The keylogger is installed on the victims computer, and sends back the keystroke logs via email, internet etc back to the person who deployed it. The hard part is getting the keylogger onto the victims comp, there are many ways such as hiding it within other applications etc etc.

like what eljonto said that's basically it.
You would need to somehow get the keylogger on the victims PC: I like to do it by batch files binded with a keylogger- the batch can act as a distraction while it also installs/runs the keylogger. Change the name of the keylogger so the victim isn't suspicious- like to Windows Update or something that will make then run it and not think twice.
Unfortunately for some; fortunate for others; keyloggers now can easily be detected by any decent anti-spyware- I found this out the hard way: just the other day my PC got hacked again- I ran AV and found keyloggers, worms, viruses, trojans, and FW killers all trying to access my drivers...
Sorry if I'm implying that YOU want to run a remote keylogger on someones computer, but to be honest, you're on HTS asking how remote spyware works so there's not much to hide lol...
