Hello,

Can anyone tell me why I'd get this message when trying to use the Java applet on the site?

Connecting...
Unable to connect : java.security.AccessControlException : access denied (java.net.SocketPermission irc.hackthissite.org resolve)

And I get this message when trying to use 'Xchat' on FC8:

* Cipher info:
Version: TLSv1/SSLv3, cipher AES256-SHA (256 bits)
Connection failed. Error: self signed certificate.? (18)

For the xChat one, you need to set it to Accept invalid SSL Certs.
Open network list -> Go to Hackthissite's -> Click edit -> Click accept invalid SSl certs -> close -> Connect.

For the other problem I'm not sure about because I hate Java.

OK... this might sound like a stupid question... but why would I want to accept invalid certs? Kinda defeats the purpose of using SSL, doesn't it? :lol:

The one we have is a self-signed certificiate, I was planning on getting a valid one for the server, but I got sick of the instability of it and retired before I had a chance to.

Yeah, Self signed certs show up as invalid because they were self signed. Signatures are designed to authenticate a certification. If you trust the signer then you can accept the cert. Self Signed cert's come down to this, "Do I trust {Hackthissite.org} enough to sign their own cert?"
