This Basic Mission Stumped me for like 30 minutes. After reading carefully and taking a break. And reading the Hints Provided. I finally understand it! I can't believe I was this slow.

Thank you everybody who posted Hints. :D :D

Hi everyone,
I'm new here and really loving the site but I'm kind of having some problem with Basic 7.
I'm completely new to Unix and I checked a lot of things to solve this puzzle but I just can't seem to understand it.
I checked the Unix and perl syntax and also read a lot of forum pages but I just can't seem to solve it.
Some help would be great thanks.

Hey !

Hard one. Hopefully, the internet is a grrrreat place to find the answer.
This is helpfull: http://www.bath.ac.uk/bucs/tools/unix/b ... eunix.html

Keep it simple. :)

But, in my very limited knowledge of hacking and UNIX, I don't understand how the check box could play the role of a terminal, isn't Unix a OS ?
If someone could help me understand that, I'd be very grateful :D

This is the best hint. got it done 5 secs after i read this :D

Rezlets wrote:Afaict this is what the script does.

The user inputs some text, let's call it X.
The script makes the string "cal X".
That script is then executed on a Linux box.
So if the user enters "2010" the command is "cal 2010" and if the user enters "xyzzy" the command is "cal xyzzy".

Note the order in which those actions are performed: the input isn't sent directly to the cal command, it's put in the string that is sent to the command line.

How would you run multiple programs with one command on a Linux machine?

I completed the mission after reading the hints but if weren't doing this on hackthissite how would you have known that form isn't secure and you can do something to it? How would you tell a secure form from an insecure one?

Ok guys, I've breezed through all of the other missions with no problem at all. I've been stuck on this one for approximately two weeks now though, and I've looked up all I can look up and tried so many diffrent strings I can't think straight. I guess I'm just having problems with syntax. Is there anyone who can help me? I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 too, so it's not like I'm new to unix/linux commands. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

No matter how much of UNIX commands I searched up, I never found out about combining anything and using the && in coordination with other commands and stuff, so in the end I ended up getting help from another website that shows answers to this website. It's name isnt obvious as HackThisSite mission answers, it's something like "dftfHtoamTidlsdSfhB" I forgot the entire thing. :P

I wouldn't look up the answer, that's cheating. I came here to learn.

I finally figured where my syntax failed me though. :) Can't believe I was so dumb haha.

Took me a good hour but i figured it out after I realised my commands were wrong. I practised on an actual terminal which helped why i kept getting blank!
