Share your 419's

Social engineering is the art of manipulating people into performing actions or divulging confidential information. While similar to a confidence trick or simple fraud, the term typically applies to trickery for information gathering or computer system access and in most cases the attacker never comes face-to-face with the victim.

I thought I'd see if I could start a running thread. I opened up one of my alternative e-mail accounts I use for umm.. stuff.. that I haven't opened in a while and actually decided to sift through some of the attempts at scams, phishes and 419s that I had gotten, and figured I'd share a couple, and you should share some of yours as well. These can be quite hilarious...

Dear Friend,

I appreciate you for writing back as I have expected. I got your email from a web journal and felt strongly to write to you. As I earlier introduced myself, I am Liliane Bettencourt, daughter of the late Louise Madeleine Berthe. I am a French Citizen, and worth $30.5 Billion Dollars. The intention of this email is to be of immense blessing to people. With my age, I cannot continue to amass wealth without giving out. I might not have the liberty of time due to my ailment (Dementia), therefore, I am doing this now.I have handed all my wealth to my only daughter, but there is part of it which nobody is aware of. I have been putting it away for this purpose since a long time now.I would be happy to cede it out to you. I would have done this myself but for my health reason and if I do it through my daughter, I am very certain she will not help anyone with it. She took me to court the last time I gave out money out of generosity. It is my hope that you are able to receive this money and help others from it too.10%

With Love,

Liliane Bettencourt

I,Liliane authenticate this email, you can read about me on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liliane_Bettencourt I write to you because I intend to give to you a portion of my Net-worth which I have been banking. I want to cede it out as gift hoping it would be of help to you and others too.

Really? I'm honored to receive an e-mail from Lili... I didn't think she knew I even existed.

Am I just old or master of obscurity.. this is a haxor community right? Here for background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/419_scams

The 419 has been around for over 100 years and was originally known as "The Spanish Prisoner" scam.

Also, it's some good fun for someone like us sometimes to do some scambaiting, to actually screw with these guys for a while and make them think they've hit upon some old lady with alzheimers or something. Good practice in all the arts of SE.

Check this place out, I frequent often: http://www.scamorama.com/ for background and good laughs.

Well, you should've said 'Nigerians', that name is pretty universal. Still, I get what you were referring to now, whatever name is used. Sounds like something worth the time before doing some SE. Thanks for the link.

I remember I had an account made to lure this stuff in.
I had over 500,000 e-mails, mostly spam stuff. I just don't remember the e-mail I used.
I'll try and find it, I'm sure I have tons of stuff in it.

I had this account since early '02 but haven't logged into it since about '10 or so

If I can't access the account or find it anymore, I'll start this project back up.

Lol, big fail. I've yet to come across these sites, I always thought most of them were used once or twice and then disappeared precisely to prevent these things. Unless you count Ninjex's example not too long ago...
