*looks at list of things to do when lagging*
Get better computer
Disable virus protection
Delete all the bullshit taking up memory *luls got virus making computer slow but got 12 virus protection programs running but virus still making computer slow help*
Check your connections
How much data is being loaded when this lag occurs? Is it your connection or theirs?
How many windows of porn videos/music do you have open during play?

There are probably more things I could list but I'm trying to cut back on trolling. Anyways, tell me any reasons you might be lagging.

Do you have an idea if your lagging from network connectivity or from a hardware issue like your video card or processor?

I think all he knows is that he has lag, and wants to know how to prevent all causes of it.

Yeah, that's pretty vague. More info would help. It would mean the difference between spending money or possibly just tweaking some settings.

FIRST you need to know what LAG is!

Lag in a traditional sense has always been considered a delay in communication between your computer and the game server host. In this regard there is only one solution for lag... get faster internet for the client, or get faster internet for the host.

ANYTHING ELSE is performance issues. Some people qualify it as FPS Lag instead of just lag. FPS being Frames Per Second. It's the speed at which your computer handles the game. Depending on the game FPS issues can be derived from a bazillion different sources.

#1 - CPU, primary offender.. your processor is just too weak.
#2 - Video Card, close 2nd.. with todays gaming, graphics processing plays an integral role in game performance.
#3 - RAM - some games (minecraft for example) rely more heavily on memory than CPU, often to increase RAM allocation for a game you will need to run the game with some additional command line parameters.
#4 - Disk I/O - the read/write speed of your hard drive - some games cache and store alot of information to your hard drive.. a SATA drive generally beats an IDE in performance, an SSD gives you ultimate performance for a premium buck, ultimately though, keeping your hard drive atleast HALF EMPTY (50% space left) and regularly optimized via defragmentation will help even a crummy IDE.
#5 - AUDIO CARD - This one often shocks people but, your computer is killer, you have fast CPU, lots of RAM and the latest GeForce video card but you still R suck... why, because you have that generic on board sound card.. meanwhile this hot game is trying to pump out dolby surround sound 5.1 to your 450 watt speakers through a piece of tin foil soldered to your motherboard. Man up and get a good sound card, you'll see audio related FPS lag go away.
#6 - Game settings - maybe you're just trying to do too much.. check your game options, run in a lower resolution, many games have options on a slider bar that simply go QUALITY ----------- PERFORMANCE --- irk that little slide more toward performance and see what happens.

I should write an article.. my gaming rig right now.. P4 2.10 ghz CPU, 1GB RAM, ATI Radeon 4600 AGP, soundblaster audigy, 128kbps dsl connection.... i'm the king of getting something out of nothing.

You should see my old pentium III 1.0 ghz cpu, 1GB Ram with a massive 20GB HDD but its BOSE Surround Sound. CPU not overclocked either.

Sidenote: This isn't my primary system

Do you have an audio card or onboard? Seriously I used to play Quake and thought i had a good rig back then but was always hitching really hard, and was like wtf.. my pc should be able to handle this.. and if was often during rocket explosions... so I thought, turn of the mipmaps and render for the explosion graphics... no-go. Finally a friend of mine (this was like 10 years ago) was like.. its your soundcard.. try muting sound effects. Muted sound, lag gone. My crappy onboard sound was choking over the explosions.. that pc was a P2 - i still have it but its in the garage right now collecting dust.

I'm still using the integrated sound card its decent and its equipped for surround sound. Mine would have problems with Grand Theft Auto III especially if you got a lot of on-screen action happening. But set the monitor to mininum resolution, turned off the tracing, aliasing and other stuff and solved that problem. But its come along way. It took 10 years before I really needed to upgrade to XP service pack 2. Not to mention in its original configuration it would die just trying to install some of the programs I run on it now. However, now I will run multiple IDE's simutaneously have music playing and watch a video for a quick diversion and never shut down anything. Did I mention the processor is only running at 733mhz.
