Do you have an idea if your lagging from network connectivity or from a hardware issue like your video card or processor?

I think all he knows is that he has lag, and wants to know how to prevent all causes of it.

You should see my old pentium III 1.0 ghz cpu, 1GB Ram with a massive 20GB HDD but its BOSE Surround Sound. CPU not overclocked either.
Sidenote: This isn't my primary system

Seriously I used to play Quake and thought i had a good rig back then but was always hitching really hard, and was like wtf.. my pc should be able to handle this.. and if was often during rocket explosions... so I thought, turn of the mipmaps and render for the explosion graphics... no-go. Finally a friend of mine (this was like 10 years ago) was like.. its your soundcard.. try muting sound effects. Muted sound, lag gone. My crappy onboard sound was choking over the explosions.. that pc was a P2 - i still have it but its in the garage right now collecting dust.
