Best way to stay anonymous?

Hey guys,

I need some advice. I have just bought a new laptop since my old one had its C drive destroyed. I have been looking around on the web for programs that deal with privacy. Mainly VPN's and proxies. I know that most proxies are not as strong as a VPN. So i would like to ask what some good programs are for free that keep me hidden online, and that help me keep my computer clean.

I would ultimately like a good vpn, but I know a good one costs money. Which at the time, is not readily available. I'm up for any suggestions.

Why bother with sketchy proxies and VPNs that cost money? If you want your IP address masked, use TOR or browse from a shell.

I am currently using TOR. It works very well, but the problem is im relaying off a dutch ip. Which is find and dandy, but when ever I use an email or search engine I get dutch results. Which makes sense but I was just wondering how I could change it so that it was an American ip I was relaying off. Help appreciated.

Restart TOR. You should get a new exit node.

And TOR won't keep you "clean." If by clean you virii. Only smart browsing can do that.

You can configure Tor to try to select an exit node, which is located in a certain country.

There's always public (or private ;)) wifi access combined with TOR.

It's quite amazing how easy it is to break WIFI encryption. So in staying anonymous, it would be wise to make sure your own WIFI has at the very least WPA2. WEP is basically no longer considered "standard" for encryption. I broke my own in 10 minutes as if I were on the street.

Just a thought.

Yes, and a strong password that won't be found in any password dictionaries.

Right, still a noob ... but also still infinitely curious, and was wondering about this tor thing. Defiance's article on a large amount of firefox programs was incredible (and I wish he was my roommate), mainly regarding foxyproxy. However, this tor/wifi magic you speak of sounds interesting at the least.

Another question that's ... somewhat relative to this post regards browsing my university's CS department shell using only my account with the general intention of expanding my knowledge of unix commands. Not trying to break into other peoples accounts or anything like that. Even though initially my prof asked me to look for security flaws in his stuff after we talked for like an hour about self teaching and crap, until I found his directories (think basic 1) to the major lab quizzes+answers and ditto for the final exam/answers, where he quickly ' clarified ' on what he meant and removed them.

Anyway. I was just wondering how safe I am in remote accessing my account/the CS Linux shell (but staying within my account) and just working on my UNIX command knowledge/usage.

P.S. Sorry if this post is a bit illogically organized. I've got the drunk in me.
