finally i got the password :)
if u still stuck figuring out the password here some hint that maybe can help u clear the mission:
1. try to figuring out the hash algorithm (maybe u can count the character length and googling to gather information about the hashing algorithm, sometimes hash algorithm have varian so try them one-by-one)
2. use cracking tools (i use jhon the ripper from backtrack 5, it works fine for me)

happy cracking :D

Dictionary attack perhaps.

But basically the intended( and easiest?) solution is to use a program? I kind of figured every mission here was possible without any external aid. I don't wanna be considered one of those script kiddie noobs and I prefer to learn everything from scratch and use the basic solutions if at all possible.

using the tools doesn't mean you didn't understand how to solve the problem. u can write your own tool if u want.
but, the thing that u are facing now is a real hashing algorithm.. so u need to lend someone knowledge that have expertise in this domain (cryptography). it will be a different story if u can write ur own tools using dictionary / rainbow table to decrypt the hash.

for me, the main point in this mission is how u can identify the password hash algorithm and the right tools to solve it..
trust me, it won't make ur pride hurt :)

I tried every hash-cracker in Cain&Abel, i tried dictionary from C&A and from John the Ripper, and nothing. This hash accept only MD2, MD4 and MD5. And it's not work. Another hash gave me error about how much hash is long. What i do wrong?

Well I can tell you it's one of those 3. Based on the information in the challenge description you should be able to narrow it down.

I can vouch for that myself. Definitely one of those.

gosh, only part i'm troubled by is whether to download cain to crack the hash. btw, anyone out there actually knows how to reverse engineer the hash?

You can't reverse hashes. That's the point of the algorithm. You'll have to brute force it.

then... is there anyway to gain access without the password? like reverse engineering the whole site?(i'm still curious bout the reverse engineering part in the mission description)
