I uninstalled it the other day. Its fast I'll give you that but I don't really like the interface. Where you see sleek I see shit, and to add to the insult its almost as if anything that could actually benefit from this type of interface doesn't use it.
I've been testing for a couple of months and besides games often crashing and the horrible interface its okay but totally not worth replacing my debian and especially not if I have to pay for it(I like to have a totally legit OS).

So those that are ridiculing win8.. they're right. Those that are loving it.. they're also right.
But both are right in totally different ways.

c3nt, have you tried using Metro (I think it's called something else now)? I thought that it was going to be a disaster at first as well, but after using it it grows on you. Besides, you only have to *rarely* use it. Most work is still done on the desktop (which is faster then win7) and Metro is only used as a replacement for the start menu. The best part is it's faster and smarter than the old start menu.

Yup, I'm running Windows 8 right now and have been using it for the better part of two months now. This weekend I'm switching back to Linux. Not because I love Linux that much, but because I hate the new Windows that much. The thing is, that it isn't quicker... At all. Yes, the code may be more efficient and updated, and it may technically run faster, but it takes me FAR longer to find and launch an application than it ever did before. Even when I memorize their spots on the 'start' screen, it still takes me longer than the old start menu. Besides, I never once sat at my computer and thought, "Gee, this start menu takes more than half a millisecond to load, they should fix that".

I find a decent correlation between Windows 8 and Windows 7 can also be applied to Unity, and Gnome 2. Unity technically
can be used faster, but that doesn't mean that it is for people not used to it. If someone has used Gnome 2 for 17+ years, and then is forced to use Unity, they're going to be slow as fuck at it.

As UEFI, what's the problem with that? The point of it is to prevent rootkits and it does a very good job of it. It doesn't always necessarily mean that you are locked into windows. It means that you *know* there is a secure pass between BIOS and your OS.

No, you're right, it doesn't mean I'm locked into Windows. It just means that they made it damn hard to do anything besides run Windows. It's like trying to write a server with the basic C library; you can do it, but it's going to be a bitch. (Thank God people in charge of Linux distros already figured out their way around it.)

Of course developing on windows or using the CLI is still just as bad as before, but of course most people don't use it for that. For what people *do* usually use it for, it does well.

Windows always ran games and looked up porn well; they didn't need to "reinvent" their interface to improve the experience.

That's just my opinion of course and I don't mean to be a know it all, I truly appreciate other views on this. I just feel like *everyone* who hates win8 hasn't even given it any chance.

Couldn't have said it better. It's fast yeah. But IMO, I can't stand the interface. I might as well be using a tablet or something to do work on. It's fancy and all, but I could never bring myself to say it's the best windows OS of all. I'd stick with win7 long before I ever willingly switched to win8. Just me though.

I'm surprised you guys all find the interface slower to use. I've found it much easier to use, even with just a laptop. Of course I only had to pay $40 for it so I imagine if you had to pay more for a legit copy you might not be as happy with it.

fas, I didn't mean to say the interface was slower. It just wasn't to my liking. It was fast and all, sleek and whatnot. I just had a hard time liking the way they made it all.

I meant slower to *use* specifically. I haven't had any problem finding apps I want or files I need. Hit the windows key and start typing. Then again I usually keep my windows install rather lightweight so I'm never looking for a whole bunch of different apps.

I have noticed GTA4 is a bit buggy in win8 but that's the only game. Everything else runs fast.

If you're raised (as I imagine most of us are) in an age where there's always a start bar, and you can always navigate through it, when you switch to something completely different it takes time to adjust and become as used to it as you previously were. I think that in about 20 years or so we'll all be just as competent with Metro as we were with the classic version of Windows, but it's not going to happen overnight.

You know, I feel like that might be my problem. Apps. I mean, I understand that it's the age of apps. But I just don't like the idea of windows having 'apps' and shit.. Leave that for iPods and phones. I miss installing software.

lol it happened with me overnight, but I think that's because I use my phone so often to navigate the web and write text files etc. i ended up figuring out windows 8s 'secrets' pretty quickly lol.

they should have had an interactive tutorial or something though imo.
maybe there is one idk.

also the apps are slightly buggy lol.
mail will sometimes 'minimize' when you open a new folder.

it takes longer to set up your apps the way you want them, but once it's set up it's faster and easier to access things, also adding file explorer to your start menu helps.

I think it's supposed to be simple enough that you don't need a tutorial. I didn't. But they do give a small walkthrough on installation.

I don't use any of the apps other than minesweeper, and sometimes netflix. Most of my computing is done through Chrome and Putty. I use chrome for all my media needs as well. No itunes or even VLC anymore.

Yeah I don't really use the apps either.
I use the internet app because it's slightly faster than the full ie.
that's about it lol.
everything else i do the same.
it's not like they have a Visual Studio app anyways lol.

also i didn't know you could play your media through chrome.
