Just a reminder, the free version of xchat for windows can be found at http://www.silverex.org or you can just get the source off the regular xchat site and compile it yourself.
mirc is also nice but its not really free it'll nag after 30 days and increase its nagging slightly more every day (or you crack it so it'll stfu)
I use regular xchat on linux and the silverex version for windows. And when you're not on your own machine http://mibbit.com is an excelent web based client.

you should probably also set it up to use ssl, the ssl port is 7000 and you may have to check the box of "accept invalid ssl certs" in xchat

I've been using mIRC, and just leaving it open so it doesn't bug me. How would I go about cracking it though?

Also, no clue how to set up ssl. Used the 7000 port, never say the box you described, and it didn't let me connect.

In mirc you specify ssl by using port +7000 (the + tells it to use ssl) but you may need to have openssl installed on your system,
you can test this by typing //echo bla $sslready bla (I added the bla's because sometimes mirc dislikes outputting non string values... ) if that command outputs $true you can use ssl and simply have to use port +7000

For xchat you need to go to the network list, edit the network and select the "use ssl for all servers on this network" checkbox and possibly also check "accept invalit certificate" (I'm not sure our certs are valid.. but I thought I fixed that a few months ago)

As for cracking mirc, I haven't used it since before they updated their registration code. In ye olden dayz you simply needed to generate a correct key based on the name you'd use. Now it actually checks on their servers if its legit. But I'm sure with some googling you could possibly find out which registry keys it uses to consider itself legit.
a quick google tells me its:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > mIRC
Now remove the file called "lastrun" which contains all your information if its registered and basically some logs.

Came back as $False, and I found the same page you found on google. Followed the instructions, mIRC still wants me to register.
The registering isn't a huge deal, since I usually never close the actual mIRC client, just the channels I was in.

you'll need to install open ssl then, you could possibly use http://www.openssl.org/related/binaries.html
alternatively you can just download the relevant .dll's and place them eather in your mirc install dir or in system32
