External hardive Type

I was recently trying to sort out my 1TB maxtor external HDD as it somehow deleted the volume on it. After tedious amounts of hours sorting the damn thing out and finally getting my computer to recognise it, on the comp managment area it said:

Disk > Type: Basic

I then checked the same thing on a thumbdrive and it said 'Removable' instead of basic.

Is this the normal type for external hdd?
And if not, how can i change it to removeable?

My external harddrive shows up the same way, so I assume it's normal.

As long as you have the option to 'eject' the drive (via the safely remove hardware icon in the taskbar), I wouldn't think it matters

I remember something about a setting in the hardware menu for making the drive removable or not, but I think that's only related to the cache.

Drive type is built into the device. I believe you can only change that designation during the creation of the volume. The primary difference I believe is that "removeable" cant be mounted or partitioned but I could be wrong.. i'm not a hardware guy.

I think you might be right, i was messing with partitions and volumes on both my external HDD and my memory stick. Memory sticks you cant from what i've tried.

Yeah, I used a hacked hardware driver once to get an SD card to be partitioned (long story, needed a FAT partition and wanted to use the other space too). Windows saw the card as an external HDD, so it would be possible to partition it. Problem was: only after installing the hacked driver would it make itself known as two partitions. Using the first partition for saving the driver worked, but I'd still need admin access to install on different computers. Didn't work quite as well as I'd hoped. So, if you're into drivers, you can just make or download one if you really need a change of type.
