How to Secure Myself?

I don't want to sound like an idiot, but I'm probably going to. Ignorance is just an incidental of inexperience. So my question is, in short, how do I protect myself. I don't want to be tracked, monitored, flagged, blacklisted, etc. So what do I need to do and how do I do it? I don't mind reading, I may be ignorant but I'm not lazy.
