Also, it might help a lot of you to know this little trick:

To get a unix cal command's output to a tad more reasonable size, consider adding a three-letter month prefix before the year. i.e: "JUL 1776;", instead of "1776".

Holy God I feel retarded. Just spent the last 30 mins staring directly at the filename wondering what to do with it. So much easier than I made it out to be.

Ok i feel like an idiot here. I know the symbol to enter two commands on the same line. I have typed multiple commands into the line and am still only able to get the date to appear and not the results of the second command. I have tried commands for listing files, for viewing the present working directory and multiple others. I feel i am over thinking this. I don't get how to make the second command appear on the screen with the calender dates.

It helps to have linux so you can test the commands. How would your run multiple commands at once?

Amending:
I do feel dumb.

3+ hours into this and haven't made any progress concerning the puzzles. I did check the hints and everything, been reading the unix commands (even printed them out), I felt that I could crack it as I have made it to puzzle 7, but after 3 hours, I just feel dumb. :?

I am an idiot. Just solved it and I have been making one little mistake over and over again. *facepalm* Phew.

Can you get any output to return from the script? After that you need to think about the directory you are in.
