([msg=65641]see Mentor looking for student[/msg])
Aww, HackThisSite. I remember those days. Hello Kage. Yes, we've talked several times.
I have finally been coerced by my peers into offering my services to help a poor newb in trouble. Don't mind the title, this isn't truly a teacher / student relationship. But I will personally be your guide which means giving you one-on-one lessons. Hopefully by next year you will know:
Introduction to Unix-like systems. Rudimentary knowledge of *nix. Advanced command line use. Some bash scripting. Rudimentary use of an advanced editor. Vi or Emacs.
Rudimentary C programming knowledge. (I use this term loosely, by the end you should be able to easily program an IRC client.)
Rudimentary exploit development. Including web-based exploits, buffer overflows, whatever else I feel like. Be prepared to waste tons of fruitless hours while I watch you work through OverTheWire and SmashTheStack wargames. I may also setup a few virtual windows workstations and expect you to write exploit code to access them. I will be there to support you each step of the way.
My collection of resources, including books.
RTFM / JFGI
What I need:
Someone who can type proper english. That usually means a native english speaker. We will ONLY ever communicate in proper english.
You need a dedicated machine for this. It must be YOUR computer. Expect to either wipe everything or dual boot. We will be using FreeBSD.
Before we begin let me mention a few things:
This course is for beginners with little or no experience.
I don't claim to be some sort-of uber-hacker. Or even a hacker at all. Don't expect me to magically know the answer to your question, but I can almost guarantee I will want to know the answer as much as you do.
With that said, don't expect me to always be there to give you the answer. I enjoy seeing people suffer, and I enjoy working on my own. That means that I might throw you some books and expect you to learn new material before my next lesson. If you truly have a problem with understanding something, I'll be glad to help you out. But expect to learn on your own as well.
I don't want to know your age or other personal details about your life. I don't want you to know details about my life either.
I don't want to know why you want to learn this material. Don't tell me you're going to be a terrorist or you want to get your CISSP eventually. I don't want to know.
Don't even THINK about asking me to “hack” into anything. EVER.
If you don't have the time or energy to put into this. Don't bother replying. I expect you to keep up on this.
That being said, I have a busy life. I might sometimes be out of contact for a few days. Don't ask why. Just smile and nod when I get back.
I'm posting this both on HTS and HBH. First come, first serve. If you are interested, send me an email (preferably PGP signed) to gh0zt [at] tormail.net I'm going to respond to email only, don't expect me to read the replies.
One more thing: I'm not the elitist bastard this post suggests. I'm just in too much of a hurry right now to be polite.
