Mentor looking for student

Aww, HackThisSite. I remember those days. Hello Kage. Yes, we've talked several times.

I have finally been coerced by my peers into offering my services to help a poor newb in trouble. Don't mind the title, this isn't truly a teacher / student relationship. But I will personally be your guide which means giving you one-on-one lessons. Hopefully by next year you will know:

Introduction to Unix-like systems. Rudimentary knowledge of *nix. Advanced command line use. Some bash scripting. Rudimentary use of an advanced editor. Vi or Emacs.

Rudimentary C programming knowledge. (I use this term loosely, by the end you should be able to easily program an IRC client.)

Rudimentary exploit development. Including web-based exploits, buffer overflows, whatever else I feel like. Be prepared to waste tons of fruitless hours while I watch you work through OverTheWire and SmashTheStack wargames. I may also setup a few virtual windows workstations and expect you to write exploit code to access them. I will be there to support you each step of the way.

My collection of resources, including books.

RTFM / JFGI

What I need:

Someone who can type proper english. That usually means a native english speaker. We will ONLY ever communicate in proper english.

You need a dedicated machine for this. It must be YOUR computer. Expect to either wipe everything or dual boot. We will be using FreeBSD.

Before we begin let me mention a few things:

This course is for beginners with little or no experience.

I don't claim to be some sort-of uber-hacker. Or even a hacker at all. Don't expect me to magically know the answer to your question, but I can almost guarantee I will want to know the answer as much as you do.

With that said, don't expect me to always be there to give you the answer. I enjoy seeing people suffer, and I enjoy working on my own. That means that I might throw you some books and expect you to learn new material before my next lesson. If you truly have a problem with understanding something, I'll be glad to help you out. But expect to learn on your own as well.

I don't want to know your age or other personal details about your life. I don't want you to know details about my life either.

I don't want to know why you want to learn this material. Don't tell me you're going to be a terrorist or you want to get your CISSP eventually. I don't want to know.

Don't even THINK about asking me to “hack” into anything. EVER.

If you don't have the time or energy to put into this. Don't bother replying. I expect you to keep up on this.

That being said, I have a busy life. I might sometimes be out of contact for a few days. Don't ask why. Just smile and nod when I get back.

I'm posting this both on HTS and HBH. First come, first serve. If you are interested, send me an email (preferably PGP signed) to gh0zt [at] tormail.net I'm going to respond to email only, don't expect me to read the replies.

One more thing: I'm not the elitist bastard this post suggests. I'm just in too much of a hurry right now to be polite.

This is kind of cool I guess.

I can't brush off my mind these 2 questions though:

1) Are there really people out there that are such altruists? Sharing is caring I guess and someone might be bored.

2) Why do people need a mentor? I mean I can understand the important aspect of bouncing ideas of off someone with similar interests to yours but that's about it. The internet has an unimaginable wealth of information waiting for anyone to start searching and learning. If you can do that on your own, I think the payoff is greater than being spoon-fed or something.

Btw, I'm not downplaying this generous move from "gh0zt-is-anonymous" but I couldn't help myself from expressing this after having seen a billion posts of people asking for mentors/hacks/passwords and what not.

Good luck to everyone!

This.

I learned everything that the OP talked about, and more, through (generally) trial and error, and Google. I've yet to see someone actually NEED a mentor, rather people are just too lazy to learn it on their own... If the OP actually knows what he's talking about and is going to follow through, kudos to the chosen "ment-ee", but I still don't see the need.

All correct opinions, but in my mind, learning on your own does take quite a bit more time than with a mentor. I would truly take him up on his offer if I didn't have so many damn commitments to various things in my life right now. My only concern is what FunctionCreep already said, is this for real, or is it a joke?

It's not a joke, as the past 6 hours I spent today is any evidence.

Alas I will not be able to spend this much time every day. Don't think of these "sessions" as lessons per say. I'm help you get the basics down, then recommend reading material and assignments. If you have trouble, I help you out.

I already have two requests now. So I don't think I will be taking any more for a while.

I like how you claim you've talked to Kage, and yet no one knows who you are or why your join date was two days ago. Either way, your persistence to give is great. So rather than offering a service to two people who are probably going to quit before the week's end, why not make an article series and offer your information for everyone to benefit from?

I think such a request would be more accepted if it would come from an established member of this comunity,or atleast someone that uses his real HTS account ( if he even has any ),also i agree with the fact that contributing with articles would be way more productive at the end of the day.Mostly because of the hts base we have lately ( see "help me hack facebook plz" )
so probably you'll find the next door kid that will ask for a tool to hack everything and will grow bored when he'll find out there is really more into it.Dunno my two cents here
