Remote File extraction, NEED help,im a noob!

Im a total noob at hacking, with a good amount of programing exp. I really want to learn more out about how to communicate through ports between 2 computers(ports, sockets, protocols, FTP, TCP, ect.). Can any one point me to where to start on the subject? My goal right now is to remotly access a friend's computer and copy/extract a file from it. Are FTP servers the only way to do this? He is aware that I am trying to hack him, so nothing short of me sitting at his computer and opening up one myself would get him to open an FTP server. I was thinking of writting a code that I could somehow sneak onto his computer that would open a FTP server up, but that will not work because his security would get in the way. Could i get around that? Sorry about asking so many questions but i'm getting pretty lost.

It sounds pretty darn illegal to me. Or at least against the will of the owner of the system.

That doesn't mean he has permission from his friend to hack him. If I hack my parents computers, and they are aware of it, I'll still get my ass beat.

The thing is that he may very well be telling the truth and his friend may be fine with it. However, there is no way to prove it. On the flip side, it may just be someone saying something that makes it sound legit but in reality is just trying to circumvent the legal issues on the site.
