Hey Everyone I just completed Basic 8. I still haven't done 7 because I got stuck on that one so I moved on.

I failed this Mission more times than you can imagine but I kept reading and reading and failing. Finally I put 2 and 2 together. All the articles tell you a little bit. Read the following two and think how it could all work together. These two articles are what I used to complete this mission.

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/howto/ssi.html
http://www.computerhope.com/unix/uls.htm

So...off to # 7 I go :P

Just finished this one.

Got to page 12 of this thread before figuring out what exactly I needed to do. IMO it was slightly spoiled by that poster. As others have said if you're finding the "you're on the right track page" you need to tweak your code.

You're trying to find names of files <--- That should help you with which command you need.

You need search the right directory <--- Should help with how to affect the command.

Hope this isn't too big of a hint.

I was on this one for 4 days. Glad I finally figured it out, but wish I hadn't had such a big hint. Even though it was probably needed haha (I'm not the brightest at computer language yet.)

I have been able to come to this basic mission. I have read the hints because I didn`t know anything about unix, scripts and that cookie things. I didnt even know html codes, but after searching for the given hints, these missions become pretty easy, so there is no need to learn the basics of html, unix and SSI strongly. Just 1-2 easy commands do my job. Hence, my question is this: do you suggest me to keep reading hints (which actually saves time for me and I dont get bored in this way) or just google the term 'SSI', keep studying it for a while and then return to the mission whenever I feel myself ok with the topic?

Hey

Just finished this one, like the others so far dont think to hard, you will make it harder than it needs to be. Any links to things that need to be known are in the first 10 pages of this thread. Apply the things you have learnt on the last few missions before this one. Remember which folder you need to be in (or get to) to see the file you want. Once you have said file think how one might be able to view it. How would i go about viewing a file or page on the internet?
its that easy.

Please edit if its to much info.

Hi!
I tried basic missions 7,8. But, my interest of solving them in the real way became less, once I found the target php files just by google search, with inurl.

As far as I remember the Basic missions are more of a puzzle rather than involving anything technical.

This extends to your question in this way, if you are interested in learning more about computers yes, you should keep searching and reading about HTML, UNIX(-oid) systems, SSI and whatever tingles your attention you google it, read it about it and you learn..

And from that point on, if this kind of life is your cup of tea, you never stop learning.. :geek:

If you are into this just for kicks and simply solving the puzzles then I don't know, if you like to solve things on your own don't read hints. If on the other hand you are bored easily I guess you'd read the hints spread around the internet..

hi all!
i discovered this site 3 days ago and it is absolutely my new ADDICTION!!! i've always wanted to learn the ins and outs of computer programming/hacking but it is really difficult to figure out how to get started (without blatantly flaunting your n00bage and setting yourself up for cruelty)...in short i want to say thanks for putting this together for people like me ~__~

now. i've been making my way through the basic missions slowly but surely. I have no computer experience beyond mandatory computer courses in middle and high school and my own probing and experimentation. That being said, i am ELATED that i've made it as far as basic 8 in the short time i've been here :D :D but basic 8 is truly throwing me for a loop! i'm a student by nature, i've not only READ the recommended articles, but i also took over 6 pages of HANDWRITTEN notes to include writing the full list of unix commands from the computer hope site. i'm certain i understand what i should be doing (i have gotten as far as the "you're on the right track" message), and i'm also fairly certain that i'm executing the proper command string. but i can't be as sure about my syntax...i passed basic 7 in minutes and the only mission that has ever taken me overnight was basic 6 and only because of the sneaky little colon  i know this mission could not possibly be designed to be this difficult or complicated (i started on this mission around midnight on monday night/morning

would anyone be willing to coach me a little via PM? take a look at what i'm entering and offer a little feedback? i would truly appreciate it...i haven't gotten past the FIRST step ;___;

peace and blessings and thanks in advance,
mooka

AFAIK this chall is "space-sensitive". Make it as short as possible.

Think about where you are being taken once you use the SSI, and where exactly the file you are viewing is, in relation to the file that you seek.

Good luck.
