I'm brute-forcing the hash with John the Ripper, but it's taking forever. Am I doing something wrong?

For this mission i used cain and abel http://www.oxid.it/cain.html
as one other said

The computer I'm cracking it on is Linux. But, a few days ago I tried Cain and Abel on my Windows computer and it said it would take 2.5 years to crack the hash.

Edit: Nevermind, I was using the wrong hash value. God, I feel stupid. lol

Also, a hint for people that made the same mistake as me. It says the database is 10 years out of date.

So I have found the hash. But I downloaded JTR, and soon discovered it does not decrypt this **** hash. But I tried to download Cain and it said it was a virus so I can't use that one either....

Any tips on how to fix this ?

Hi,

I'm not sure if it is okay to post the type of the hash. I really don't know...
If you download C&A from the official site it should be virus-free I think (unless the server has suffered an attack)
If if remember well, JTR will do you nothing with this chall, so you need to use C&A.
If you're afraid of getting a virus, download bochs from [url]bochs.sourceforge.net[/url] (or another VM - btw I prefer this one;)), install some kind of win32 (98SE is enough:)) and use this to crack the hash. This way, the majority of viruses won't harm your physical stuff.

I got the hash and found out how to get the pass without knowing anything about spiders.
Is that intentional? Because it looks like a shortcut through the mission. I'm glad that I read more about this mission which taught me a lot nonetheless .

What I did:

1. Click
2. Saw unknown directory
3. Found hash
4. Remembered message digest + 10 year old database = password

No spoiler in here, right?

I have a problem. On the site you're supposed to hack, is it necessary to download/view the files that they give you? (Such as Contact Us) Because my computer isn't accepting them. Stupid computer doesn't have Microsoft Outlook.

Hint for this nice, easy mission:

1st step. Spot the directory of information.
2st step. Spot the encrypted password.
3rd step. Download a programm called Cain !
4rt step. Try to learn how this program works
5th step. Decrypt the encrypted password in Cain!
6th step. Try the password!
7th step. Try Realistic 6!
