so my dads cell phone service was broken in to earlier. they called his account and used the last 4 Social Security number and called from a number we actually have on our account but don't ever use. thankfully it has been taken care of. I would like to know however:

how easy is it to spoof/clone/ whatever he did to call off our number? could this be a noobie or a pro?

we know roughly where the call came from(the state), is there anyway to tell/track where it came from and more importantly who is doing this?

If your phone was spoofed and it happend to connect to the mobile cellular network (i.e. it made a call); call your provider. All major cell providers have a deal in place which allows them to interop billing; using the same strategy they can tell where the cell was connect (which tower) at the time of connecting to the circuit.

I'm not sure if it still applies, but I've seen methods of doubling SIM cards. That way, people will have the same service as you at the same time. Now, cool people like mShred use Sprint which has no SIM cards.

A spoofed call is still traceable, in most cases. It's basically sending a text message with a different phone number that shows up but if your phone records were subpoenaed by the authorities for all incoming calls, it would show the original number that the call came from, not the spoofed number. This doesn't apply to every situation but if it's spoofed through an app....it's probably discoverable.

Phone packets are like the network packet, if you have knowledge of network packets, which on the phone packets is tied a service code, phone number, phone emei, a code that the SIM generates(this part wasn't cracked yet), the data, etc.

But if you want to try to phone spoof, you can be tracked pretty easy(They can track your location by triangulation). But this only the service providers can make, and the info they can only give to the Authorities.
