Laptop Start Up Issues

Hey guys,

I just helped my friend get rid of some Malware on her computer, and now it's having a new problem: After using it for a few minutes it restarted itself, but froze after showing the "Acer" screen for about two seconds. Now every time she tries to start it, it goes to that same blank screen and freezes.

We deleted the Malware by putting the computer into safe mode, then using the short cut for the Malware (Specifically it was Security Protection) to open up the file location and delete it from there. After emptying the recycling bin we restarted the computer, and then the above happened. (At first we tried using RKill to stop the Malware from stopping computer processes, but that didn't end up working).

The computer is an Acer Aspire One Netbook. It was running Windows 7. Here is the SNID # if you want to look it up online: 00626965816

If anyone could give me some help, that would be fantastic - Hopefully it's just something small that I haven't thought of yet. Let me know if you need anymore information on the computer.

Thanks,
MNP_Hikaru

This is in no way my area of expertise, so i might be way off. What exactly did you delete? You might have corrupted the Windows installation. Try booting with a recovery CD?

We literally just deleted a Defender Malware - Fixed my own laptop the same way a while back but never ran into anything like this. =/

Do you remember the name of the files? Or the folders? This information is kinda essential if we're going to help you out. Also don't be shy, detail everything you did out.

It sounds like you hosed the OS. Best option is to boot a live CD of Linux (Ubuntu, etc...) and try and recover any important files. Then do a clean install. I'm not sure if there is anything else you can do to fix the current installation, anyways, it'd be the safest bet against the malware.
The glass is neither half-full nor half-empty; it's merely twice as big as it needs to be.

The file was called "Defender.exe". It was the only thing we deleted, and it was located in Program Files. That really is all we did, other than an initial scan with MRT in safe mode to remove the back door.

Sounds like Defender.exe hosed some files in your particular case. You were most likely lucky the first time deleted it without issue.
Do what Fazz said, recover what you can and do a clean install......
