Book on how to program for absolute beginners

Hey guys,

Could you recommend a book on how to program, for people who are totally new to this type of thing.

I'm not sure how many different types of programming there are, but I don't really have the knowledge to specify.

So far, I've found this site : http://www.howtoprogram.it/ which is fairly useful, but I'd prefer using a book to learn about programming

Well it's a little dependent on what language you're looking to learn. A lot of people will suggest Python for a beginning language. I suggest the "Learning <insert language here>" series. Their Perl edition was amazing. They also have a good PHP/MySQL/JavaScript version. I guarantee they have a Python version. But even though i like to actually hold a physical book, i've got tons of unread PDF's just layin around.

If you go to any book shop in there computer section, you'll find tons of books on various programming languages. Or just search Google.
