Yes, a lot of people use the IRC. Did you join the main channels (#help and #hackthissite)?

I think you'll find there are more regular users on IRC than on the forums. Like sanddbox said, you need to join the channels (/join #hackthissite).

tbh I can't stand IRC. I find forums to be more 'real thought' provoking and allowing people to engage in thought out discussions and debate... the IRC tends to feel more like spamathon and FU this and STFU that.

True that. Though there is the occasional thought-provoking conversation, they are pretty rare. This is why I predominantly log in to collect logs and then idly skim over them for the good parts when I get bored. It's also one of the only ways to get any actual news about the site. Loose-tongued staff don't visit the forums.

^ I usually will get on a few different channels, but rarely actually get on the main channel. To me, it's pointless.
Semi-related, on Mumble there is a lot of bull-crapping going on, but at the same time there is also a lot of good information going on. Less trolling, more getting to know each other and more actually talking about relevant things.

I am using xchat as I am typing this. You need to first configure a server. The server is irc.hackthissite.org. Configure the port to be 6667, you can change it for SSL later. Then put in your Nick and everything. Hit connect, then join difference channels. If you read what it says when you first get on, it'll point you to some of the basic channels. Just right click those and hit join channel. It's all pretty simple once you get the hang of it. You can also use the syntax "/join #CHANNELNAME". If I left anything out, it should be pretty self-explanatory.
