Taken from Hacker News.

Internet Providers Must Keep User Logs.

I think I'll be keeping an eye on this one, and if it passes, it may be time to start doing all of my business at the local coffee shop. The exclusion of wireless in this proposal also smacks of special interests...

If this passes, I feel extremely sorry for my neighbor.

Don't the feds have anything more important to deal with than how long a provider holds on to user logs?

Their already retaining the logs that part is nothing new. Their just going to make it so they are kept longer. Honestly, we can expect more stuff like this in the future because of what is and recently has gone on.

In my opinion it is sort of like a preemptive wiretap on your phone without any cause. Just in case you ever do something wrong, you are never allowed privacy.

This is nothing that a good VPN or Tor can't solve.

This is a great article (written by the awesome Violet Blue who refers to herself within the article as a "porn loving American Girl") covering this topic.. I was going to post a new thread but then I came across this thread that is already on the topic.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/violetblue/how-the-new-8216protecting-children-bill-puts-you-at-risk/590?tag=nl.e539

This has passed in the HOUSE already.

And the REST of you should really stop thinking about TOR as a reliable safeguard for your online privacy. I think of TOR like driving on the Interstate with a RADAR detector. It's a false sense of security that will make you feel better about speeding. Then BAM a cop turns on his gun from a hidden location as you pass him and your thing goes freaking nuts. There are several proof of concepts for various TOR busting methods and alot of money is being poured into the technology not by government or police but by RIAA, ASCAP and BMI to bust Torrents. Also Honeypots can jack you up, tracking cookies, DHS sanctioned malware for snooping on U.S. citizens, and lets not forget everything Microsoft. The anonymous browsing thread has been covered a dozen times however so I'm not going to keep ranting here... but to stay on topic.. this bill sucks kiddie balls.

ya that's right.. kiddie balls - the official bill name is "Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act of 2011."

which is code for.. we just assfucked your rights.

Not quite. It has passed the House Committee and is on its way to the floor. There's still a small glimmer of hope before someone redresses it for a new vote next year.
