I think you have a misunderstanding. If you can see the contents, then you just have to take the next step. Which is using what you found to find the obscurely named directory.

i don't know anything about an obscurely named directory. only about an obscurely named file and i know the filename. but when i try to display this file instead of the perl file, the page is empty after the cal output.
for example, (i think this is not a spoiler) when i try to display index.php the page keeps empty too (except the cal output).

Obscure file, that's what i meant. You are looking way to far into this. You've done the hard part. Just think, how would you normally view a file?

I litrally screamed at one point trying to do this, i done everything, i tried everything, and nothing was working!.
then I figured it out, a certain letter looked like something else, so I was mistyping, so heres my tip;

If you are really having problems, and have honestly typed in every possible answer, check spellings, copy and paste information into word and change the font, make sure your actually typing what it says in the command lists!, after all that, its childs play!

I have gotton to the point where I got the calander up with its listed files with;

Edited out file names

now when I try and open these files with a new line of command nothing happens and I have tried several different commands to open each file. So far more emacs vi dont work. Could anyone tell me the correct syntex to read these files?

You need to edit that post. Its a complete spoiler.
Anyway, how would you normally open a directory in a website.

Hey Thanks a lot when I read your post it was a total duh moment. Just wondering though those files still should have produced information in the shell shouldn't it? Why did the regular unix commands not work?

PS sorry for the spoiler I didn't realise what I was looking at when I wrote that if theres anything else you want edited let me know.
