Actually, most people would first start an attack by taking a cursory look at the application's major components, all of these requests being run through an intercepting proxy. Once a potentially vulnerable area is found, various tests would be run (a mixture of manual and automated is preferred) to see how the code might be exploited to gain a foothold. If none can be found, I might then look into the source to see if there's anything to be revealed that I might have missed in the previous steps.

But you probably knew all of that already -_-

Hmm, I realize that most of this stuff is obvious.. but I wish I would be taught what kinds of things I'm looking for before being tested on them. I'm not stupid, eager to learn, but not guided at all. Not that I'm mad, I know I haven't asked. I passed the idiot test pretty immediately. That felt good, but the second one.. I started to get discouraged, I felt like I was looking for nothing in a box of everything. Just waiting for something to click.

Basically, I know a little javascript, and a decent amount of html, but still... I'm sure I could figure it out if I beat around the source and learn.. but it'd be a lot easier if I understood the terminology, I think that's my problem. I have no clue what they're telling me to look for in my own language. I feel like i'm trying to learn french just by staring at a french novel all day. Possible, yes, practical, no.

Its the same for me.. i know a little HTML but dont know what i am suppose to be looking for in the basic missions ( the source of the page) so I am trying quite hard but with no guidence i cant find anything, so if some1 would be friendly enough and maybe explained me a bit of what i am suppose to be looking for or just tell me about a webpage or a forum where i could find an explanation and guidence.

You'll need to fumble around for a while on your own until you learn general concepts of what you're looking to accomplish in each mission--where the vulnerability lies. Until then you can always open up the thread for the specific challenge you're working on in another tab; many of them will give you strong clues of what to look for.

Well, I'm going to make fun of you broskie.

You say that you're "trying hard" when really you're not. If you were trying at all you would attempt to actually learn HTML and then learning JS would be an easy task after that. All you're doing is giving up and not actually trying to learn, you want to be spoon fed. Being a hacker is not about asking for help on every task that you come across and personally I doubt anyone wants to spend their time in spoon feeding you things.

And you're pulling up the forums in another tab, right? Between the forum topic for each respective challenge and the challenge itself, most of the challenges can be had with a varying amount of trial and error.

Or if you're totally stuck post a question on a topic's thread! Look at how many people posted on basic 1 FFS.

And if you're stuck on basic 7 likely hundreds of other people got stuck there as well; above all it's supposed to motivate you to learn a bit more alt. OSs. It's much easier if you have CLI experience with Linux, for instance. Keep trying, I fumbled my way through quite a few challenges by learning things along the way; keep learning.
