well.. Im trying to fix my friends computer, and Ive finally got it booted to windows XP after deciding a reformat was the only plausible option. now when I connect a cat5 ethernet to the ethernet adaptor, I get a connection, but not an ip or DNS. I am running it off of a router, wich I am using on my laptop right now (via the same cable I tested on his computer) We have figured out that the connection is "Unable to query TCP/IP settings of the connection".

anyone got any ideas...

yes there is a driver installed for it.

no there is no driver CD.

Just configure it manually.

And I'm not sure about using cat5... you may need a crossover cable, I always use a router between my machines, so I don't even own a crossover.

What are you trying to connect to?
His computer to yours? Then configure it manually.

His to the Internet? Their DNS should be able to assign his computer an ip.

Is his a laptop or desktop? if it's a desktop, put a spare network card in there... (I had to do this before, but I don't remember why) and connect the cat5 to that.

Was it able to connect to the network before you reformatted? If not, it is probably a hardware problem and you need to purchase a new NIC.

Otherwise, it is a software problem. Disable the Windows firewall, and manually configure the IP and DNS addresses for your ISP. Try connecting right into the modem, without the use of a router.
