I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, so I can't use Cain and Abel for this mission. I tried using JTR, but I don't understand how to use it with an MD4 hash, I then tried lcrack, but that didn't work either... can anyone point me in the right direction for this? :\

I'm in the same boat with my linux machine. I'm using lcrack, because it has functionality for many types of hashes. I did figure out that it may pay off to play with the different options for hash type too. I'm trying to bruteforce 5 and 6 character strings right now.

The only thing I don't understand is the hash collision thing. Is that important for decoding the hash?

Also, with certain hash crackers, I've found that it can pay to be careful how you input the hash into the hash cracker.

Google what hash collisions are. They are not the same as bruteforcing hashes.

After a lot of trying I finally cracked the hash :) (not smart to only use a-z  )
One thing though; The only reason I found the hash was because the site said google indexed it, and he fixed it, but turns out he didn't really fix it?
So I dunno if you were supposed to find it that way, but I kinda feel like this was too easy, so any1 care to tell me how it actually should've been done?

cracking the hash...

Post by BoredDanMan on Mon Aug 16, 2010 11:56 am
([msg=43814]see cracking the hash...[/msg])

i've installed lcrack for osx, and my hash was 4578f950bfb42d2c704be59427db4dcc. i set up lcrack to look for an md4 hash 1-6 characters in length, using the charset abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789 and got no results. i even tried broadening my search to include capital letters as well and i got no password. can anyone give me any advice?

Just finished this mission. Used Cain to crack the hash for the password.
Thanks everyone here for all your posts and links to other web sites. Very helpful.

No JOHN , or Cain/Abel needed. If you are running ubuntu and want to execute win32 software = Wine.

Hint: collision.
