Cisco Networking??

What's the best way to setup a home network? Why should I care about BGP?

It's HTS' secret fetish: mostly nude fat men. It IS the stereotype for all interweb dwellers aint it? Of course except for imcrafty. Or at least she SAYS she has a vagina. We don't know yet.
The glass is neither half-full nor half-empty; it's merely twice as big as it needs to be.

A Cisco cert will help but won't by any means make you a hacker. With knowledge in networking you could at least be aware of obstacles you may come across such as firewalls, ACLs, proxies, etc. Not all of that is covered in the CCNA level but you should come out of it with a basic understanding of network flow and client/server transactions. If you're going through the Cisco Academy you'll also get some exposure to Wireshark which is a decent packet sniffing tool. Once you know the networking basics it shouldn't be too extremely difficult to advance your knowledge on your own, or through more classes if your wallet permits.

Thanks for trying to be helpful, but the person posted this in 2010. Look at the post dates to avoid a bad necro.
A broken clock is right twice a day, however, I am neither up that early nor up that late...
