<br>Hmmm? The programming challenges let you use your own language of choice to complete the mission. Batch is strictly Window$ though, where as learning something like Perl will be very portable and WAY more effective. Not to mention Perl is very powerful and almost as easy as learning all the ins and outs of batch.

You like Perl a lot don't you? I think that although Perl and other full featured languages are much better for the programming missions than batch or shell scripting. but I also think that both batch and shell scripting (with the emphasis on shell scripting) are also very important to know- if just for compatibility. Shell scripting is much more powerful than batch is
(by default, windows has a shitty command line), but if all you use is some form of *nix and hardly even touch windows, it narrows you're options for what you can do on a windows computer considerably.

This is not the algorithm. This is close.

I still think batch files and shell scripting are really important if you're into the kind of stuff. And it'd be cool if there were some missions or something to help start out with it.

Yes, batch and shell scripting can be powerful, but it sounds like you are just starting out. Learning something more portable and higher-level then batch or shell will get you off to programming smarter and better imho. Then, after seeing what, say C, certain functions do, you will become interested in how the operating system executes these commands. That's when batch and shell would be more intriguing and useful.

And yes, I love Perl. And I have had the chance to mention in it two threads already. :P

I use batch in real world scenarios to a very effective degree. Batch has a very unique ability to do interesting things in windows based environments (and windows is the most popular OS).

Batch would also go a long way in teaching 'newer/younger' hackers about hacking history... and brushes up on some very important basics that many forget about in today's GUI environments. I would be happy to develop a half-dozen or more practical batch missions.

Batch is not an effective hacking IN-to tool.. however it is an effective tool once you have managed to hack into something or within an environment you have access to. Batch scripts executed in startup scripts, or through windows scheduler can easily bypass anti-virus and windows firewall... as they are integral OS related commands, very rarely, once on a computer will they ever flag suspicion.

On a non-hacking note, batch is very handy for system administrators and IT people in order to perform routine, scheduled maintenance.. especially on LAN's where maintaining each workstation manually is laborious. You may also use batch effectively as a CRON in a windows environment.. etc etc... as well as Batch.. BASH should also be something we should consider making effective use of.

my 2.5 cents.

OK I know nothing about Batch files so I'm reading this thread and getting a bit of education on them leading me to google and I thus found this http://www.allenware.com/icsw/icswidx.htm
Not sure if it's of any interest or not but thought I'd add it in.

There should be Logic/Basic/X missions where you have to write SQL queries or UNIX commands to accomplish something.

I know it has been said many times before, but the language you choose will depend on what sore of progamming/hacking you are interested in. If you post specific interests we can help you out easier.
