I think i just lost some brain cells reading your post, but anyways yes you do download it, or you could order it from the respective website. I would recommend that you dual boot ubuntu for awhile until you get used to linux and make sure you get a windows install disc with your computer just in case you want it later, plus you will have paid for it.
Ubuntu can be downloaded here
then just burn it to a disc and install.
