Try googling the name and model of the phone with "unlock codes" on the end.

Example: "Samsung SGH-A707 unlock codes"

Check out howardforums.com for all of your phone flashing needs. There are also some good videos on youtube.

QPST software is what I generally use to switch a phones prl file to another carrier. I got the spc unlock software from unlocktotalk.com but I think their site is currently down.

Most phones are unlocked with an unlock code, alternatively, some have a "secret" menu, that can be accessed by entering a specific code at a certain location which would allow you to unlock the phone.

True, and a lot of them are six zeros "000000" but if you don't have the code or don't know it, the unlocking software will spit it out for you in seconds. I recently changed the unlock code on a Blackberry pearl to the six zeros, and although I don't remember what the original code was now, it was something along the lines of "344621". There's probably a list somewhere online of unlocking codes. Its just as easy though to plug the phone into the computer and run the program to unlock it if you plan on switching prls anyway.

Out of curiosity, how does that program work? Does it simple detect your phone model and execute code on it that has the equivalent effect of typing in an unlock code? Or does it do some more interesting things?
