Newb's questions of missions...

Alright... I'm new... so, there's something I want to know about these missions... can we do ANYTHING to get the password? Or do we have to stay within the bounds of... say, normal stuff... because I would really like to know if cracker tools are allowed. Mostly because I have no idea how to use them, would be found out in a second, and I don't want to go to jail for not knowing something... so, my question is, can we use cracker tools for missions?

Using tools is strongly discouraged.
You don't learn anything from using such tools and you won't get any better.
Certain tools are expected to be used - but such things as vulnerability scanners etc are discouraged.

Most of the missions can be solved totally by using a web-browser, your brain, and some knowledge. In some cases however, you'll need to use password crackers (for example, if you manage to get a password hash).

And of course, there's plenty of tools you could use for the Application missions.

Should say "hash" cracker really. What you said is right, but people do seem to get password brute forcers and hash crackers mixed up, so I prefer to try and keep the terms separate.
What you said was better put actually, the application missions do require some more tools.

I have question too about this basic misions. i actually passed Idiot mission so i guess i'm on level of idiot now xD
ofc i sux and just start to learn all these things so i'm asking do i need to have some programs in these missions (precisely mission 2) and what i need to know to complete that mission. Just for record, i read (and understood) basics of HTML from http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp . what else i need to know?
btw can i somehow change code or smth.. o.O i know this question is stupid but not yet sure how all this works. i guess i can't do anything with that page source code........

A lot of these missions just require common sense. You cant rely solely on your knowledge of HTML, javascript injecting, or whatever you may be using. You have to remember that whatever you are trying to hack was originally written and developed by other human beings. This means that sometimes you need to step away from your computer and think to yourself "what was the developer thinking when he/she wrote this?" when faced with a difficult problem. Like i said, a little common sense can get you through just about anything.

For example, and in answer to your question B4d3, on basic mission 2 just read the mission description out loud to yourself. Read it as many times as it takes to get it. Just use your common sense and the answer will come to you.

P.s. regarding mission 2- I'm really not sure how to say this without directly giving the answer away, but just read it and chew it over in your thoughts for a second. You're staring right at the answer.

This thread is semi-necroed but regardless, if you need hacking tools to beat the basic missions you will never be a good hacker. Reasons why: Basic mission are easy (some of them do take time though, especially when starting out), only script kiddies depend on programs, and you won't learn anything.

I think most people miss the point of these missions, its so after you learn something you could test and maybe even expand your knowledge

ok i have read the html thin 2 times and did the do it ur self things but i still do see how it helps u 2 answer the password on basic 1 and i also took a look at basic 2 after i read thedotmaster's post and i didint know what 2 do can any one help me under stand what the hell im sapos 2 do?????????????? if so e mail me here
