Yes
And I'm also absolutely shocked by the number of topics which discuss asking for something in prayer... What about saying thank you? Has anyone ever considered if God hears us when we say thank you? (And this is not meant to start a discussion on whether God exists, there are enough of those topics, it's merely a question for those who actually do believe)
It doesn't matter who you are, there is always someone out there who has it a lot worse than you do!

An interesting way to look at prayer could be as personal motivation. A pep-talk to yourself, if you will. And that by itself definitely helps - puts a sick patient in a better mood, a sports team will be driven to play better, etc.

I'm going to expand slightly on my last comment that "Prayer is very powerful" by saying that I firmly believe that prayer works and I pray daily as a Christian.

This is precisely the thing that makes religion so "unbelievable".
I hope all you religious people do realize that this is whats wrong with religion. Everything is so undefined. The fact that you can make this thread, discuss and make up new meanings of "prayer" without any real evidence salitifies my non-belief. I can't make a thread, where I make up new rules to evolution, or argue the way gravity works on me.
Someone earlier posted that prayer wont give you anything/everything you ask for but, praying for someone to get better does work? It's funny how the only prayer that works is the kind that cant be proven.
If prayer isn't this literal thing, that I was taught, and understand it is, and is more of a self-help thing then I won't fight to take away your messed up ways of getting through life. I just think "prayer" as I know it, is a ridiculous belief. As someone said before, stop praying to help something/someone when you can actually do something that matters.
