hackthissite should have hackthisbox, a real challenge for hacking real box :) a simple running server app with available source code.
you should:
1) find a bug in source code
2) write an exploit
3) exploit it to gain an access
4) read the pass (written in file) and enter it in HTS for points

There used to be rootthisbox, but it has been down for a while.

Wherein our citizen journalist attempts to better herself by learning to hack, realising soon after reading Basic Mission 1 that this may take a few years.

Week 2
Returned today to HTS after last week's discouraging failure to solve Basic 1; the wonderfully titled "Idiot Test" - what charming soul came up with that name? I had resolved to find other hacking resources than this site, but goddamnit I just couldn't let it go.

Opened source, searched for "password", nope.
Read source from top to bottom, understood basic html commands, but little else.
Continued w3 tutorials on html, found info on password fields,
Tried a new search of source; found something that looks like answer to Basic 1.
Got excited thought I had the answer, registered, tried to find some helpful mod to question.
No chance.
What in tarnation am I supposed to do with answer??
Or is that a riddle too, she asks herself.

yours in bewildered befuddlement,

Well tankfly, hacking isnt for eveyone, takes too long to learn for alot of people and most give up.

Basic 1 is ment to teach you to look through the source for something that might stick out, in this case its the password. If you cant find it then read slowly through it, its in the source code somewhere.
Protip: use firefox.
Im off, last year of school and all, I had something longer but char limit fucked that up. So yeah, had a good run here. Thanks for the memories. Thanks to the staff and users.

Quite frankly Tankfly, stop moaning.
If you can't beat the challenges then you aren't good enough. So either learn, or quit now.

Thanks for all the friendly feedback :)

I think I've solved the first mission, I have what seems to be the answer.

Now what? Do I email it to Obama, do I enter it as new password for answering service?

Or do I simply cogitate upon it in a nirvana-like fashion.

btw this is not moaning, it is a query.

There is a password box on that page, input it there. Please try and keep this on topic.

"on topic", I'll show you on topic.

I wish upon a star, that there was a clear concise guide to HTS missions. One that does not seek to ridicule, remonstrate or belittle newbies.

And now back to HTML tutorials.

There are HTS-mission guides, and some of the guides are already on forum. The rest are the articles which you may find on site. http://www.hackthissite.org/pages/articles/article.php

By the way, please read Basics thread here: http://www.hackthissite.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=14
As you already know, Basic 1 requires you to find the password. If you find the correct password, simply copy/paste the answer in the input field. Win.
hi am new so plz dont troll me or i report 2 the HTS mods ty
