im getting really frustrated...
i got how to do everything in seconds... i typed in AAAAAAAA and saw how it changed them and understood is uses an ascii chart, and i have the answer.. i "submit" my decrypted password and it tells me i have the wrong one but ive checked it 4 or 5 times its not possible.. any help? please PM me.

P.S. i wanted to share what i found but i didnt want to spoil it incase i was close.. and wanted to pm a moderator but couldnt find a link to do so.. help² lol

This is probably one of the hardest Basic missions, especially if you're new to encryption.

Hint: Let's say you want to decrypt abcdefg. If you did a bit of research, you should know that it decrypts each char backwards. How many characters does abcdefg contain? Let's try some subtraction here.

I know you said you have checked it 4 or 5 times but apparently something isn't right in your decryption. What you enter in the 'encrypt' box should come out to match the password exactly. If it does, then you have the right answer.

Hmmm.
I happen to be stuck on this one also. It seems that people are posting to direct hints and questions though. Would anyone care to type up some information on cryptography in general? I'm pretty sure that the purpose of Basic Mission 6 is to introduce us newbies to deciphering messages, thus getting instructions specific to this one problem and running around with an ascii table probably wont help later on.

If anyone has time enough and knows enough to share, please reply.

I truly felt stupid after I solved this mission. I learned that for something that looked impossible, it's quite easy. I figured out the encryption technique after the 5th letter/symbol. If I can solve this without any prior cryptology knowledge, you can too. Just simply listen to the hints on the first couple pages...they helped a lot.

Anyways, great mission.

The use of an ascii table isn't necessary for this mission but can make the decryption process a little smoother. You're given a password that has been encrypted and your goal is to figure out the algorithm that was used. To do this, you are conveniently given the opportunity to see the encryption in action. Enter something in the 'encrypt' box and watch what happens to what you have entered. Notice a pattern? Once you do, use that knowledge to figure out what needs entered in the 'encrypt' box that will equal the given password. That decryption will be your answer.

Thanks!

This is by far the best/only hacker community I've found, considering my wanna be hacking.

I'll keep trying.

(Kinda off topic, but are the first 5 missions real world security flaws? Do people really make mistakes like that? Or is it just to get us thinking the right way?)

People have made mistakes like that but for the most part these are to get you thinking the right way and teach you some basics before moving on to the realistics.
