I'm no expert on this, but if you're a gamer, go for one that supports the chipset of the graphics card you're going to want. I believe PCI-E 2x is the best right now.

I am an expert on this =P

But you can't just say "This is the best motherboard EVAR!!11!"

You have to look at the whole system, the motherboard must have enough pci-e slots for you, it has to support the chipset for the processor you want, it's got to have enough PCI slots so you can run what you need to run. It needs to be the right form factor for your box. Some people build backwards, and build everything but the mobo, then at the end, go find a motherboard. Some people build from the motherboard, all the way out to a box.

Personally, I pick the processor I want, I find a mobo that will support it, and then I decide at that point, whether I'm going to do SLI, or how many peripherals I'm going to be connecting and especially which box I'm going to use.

So if you come back with a bit of the other information, then I'll go ahead and help you out. But you can't just say "best mobo evar"

I've always been of the mind that Asus > most

but a-bit, DFI, and even (slight retch) intel have good mobos.

As Wyrm said, pick your processor first.
If you're going for gaming, i'd also pick SLI vs CrossFIRE before the motherboard
Then narrow it down by built in features (eg: number of USB ports, integrated RAID controller, etc.)
Price is also a factor, you can get crazy with features if you want, but you might do better spending that extra money on more RAM or a better processor.

Oh, always do your research!

Most of new motherboards all fit the same box. Generally every motherboard from/after the P4 era can fit in the same box. Also, i prefer asus over other motherboards because i found them to be very stable, have good bios and support. I also like the fact that they have motherboards without useless stuff like onboard graphics and sound chips, since I get my own hi end parts for that.

Since you don't sound like an expert, I suggest reading the reviews too. Generally (but not always) reviews can be very helpful.

If you find anything, post it here so we can check it out too. I have always had good luck with asus and MSI.

I just built a new system around a P5N-E SLI. Been running strong for about a month.
