I don't know where to start.

I have fairly basic skill in C++ and I'm interested in learning how to design a few games and eventually learn enough about networking to make an encrypted messaging system for my personal use. I know I need to learn a lot more. Right now I'm just interested in hacking as a hobby. I need someone to point me in the right direction (languages, books, level of experience needed, etc.).

Maybe you should look into some of those dummie books. C++ for Dummies, Networking for Dummies. Things like that. Just read up on topics that interest you. Maybe do some of the programming missions here on HTS to test your coding skills.

Every single one is LAN connection. Mainly between you and your modem/router.

If you're looking to get into video game development I'd suggest you start here:

http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/

I used to use this program but never really furthered myself in that field. The GUI is awesome, it's really easy to throw together a game, and you can also make it as complicated as you want with customized scripting (I don't know what language it is in, I kinda forget). But hope that helps you.
