Why is it that the registration form has a timezone selection, as it screams almighty buggery the second you select something other than 'UTC-5' . It seems a little pointless.

Well, the timezone is there to change the time of a post to your according timezone. So you can see easier when a post was posted, compared to now. It makes sense, and it workes for me just fine.

lucyg, thank you for pointing that out. I mentioned it to bren2010, and he fixed the problem. So anyone with timezone fetishes can happily change their timezone at will now.
