Where to start?
1)Learn every aspect of hacking techniques:
Cross-site scripting
...
Usefull stuff:
phrack, Hacking exposed, security lists, wiki, google

Wow, thanks! What about python? I guess that's less relevant for hacking, though? I'm not sure. I recently installed ubuntu, so I want to learn python - does it have any applications outside of my own system/others' computers that run on linux?

any programming language is useful, learn it if you wish to learn, personally i think c/c++ or perl would be better for hacking

Python runs on Windows and OS X too, but doesn't come pre-installed on Windows. You can do just about anything with it.

Thanks. Obviously I have to go and learn a lot about python, but I wasn't sure whether it would be a good use of my time (as a newbie) or it would be better to learn another language first. I'm working through the basic missions, anyway, so at the moment I'm focusing on unix command lines and such, but before I move onto realistic I think I'll pause and spend a little time dabbling with different languages to at least get a feel for them.

I'll go ahead and post this for Thetan.

You can Google for the free version if you don't want to buy it.

Thanks! The free link's on that page, too, so no need to google. Much appreciated. I'm bogged down with uni work at the moment, so I don't think I'll have time to even begin learning properly until sometime in June, but hopefully I can get a little bit done before that :)

No one will mentor you. Especially when you don't bother reading before you speak.
