Need book on C++

First, I went through all the threads and didn't find anything.

I am starting college this fall as a CS major and don't know anything passed creating strings and arrays. Recommend me a great book or online tutorials. So far I am learning from cplusplus.com, but I want to know if I can get my hands on something better.

P.S. Same thing for JAVA if you happen to know of any please!!!

For C++ I highly recommend: C++ A Beginner's Guide second edition by Herbert Schildt - ISBN: 978-0-07-223215-8

And for Java I would recommend Java Gently Third Edition by Judith Bishop.

I've used both books on my undergrad course and I swear by both of them, both are excellent books. Hope that helps.

If you finish the chapter about pointers and structures you can read(this stuff its not language specific):
Data Structures and Algorithms in C++,2nd Edition (usually you will learn this in the first year of collage).

After finishing the object orientated programming chapter I recommend reading about Design Patterns and Anti Patterns.

For c++ KNR is sooo the way to go.
But the book I learned on, and will own until the day I die is by Dietal and Dietal 0136117260

It's a great book, and was the one required in first year University. Students from other years were on a different book, and many of them spent the cash to get the book.

In second year, I had to learn Java in a very short time. Java in plain English was a fun book. .It's dated now, but if you can get your hands on one I'd say it could guide you well.
