Even though the novel is targeted toward young adults, it takes on significant concepts such as macroeconomics and labor rights. It covers the new and fast evolving concept of virtual economy. In the book they are able to organize "players" in online worlds to all take certain actions to upset the balance of the in-game worlds. So its not specifically about hacking, though it does include some, especially exploiting the human element.
