Free IRC alternatives?

Hey, so I closed Xchat for the first time in apparently over 30 days, and found out while trying to re-open that I need to register to continue using. I've already gone through my trial version of mIRC, as well. Is there a free IRC client out there that I haven't heard of? I don't have the budget to pay for the licensed versions at the moment (though, if it comes to that, I'll probably do that in a few weeks) and I've come to really like hanging out in #coffeesh0p.

If not, that's fine. I'll just wait till I can afford the license. Thanks for the help.

Thanks! I just hooked up a third monitor which I'll probably dedicate to IRC lurking, so it was a real bummer to find out XChat needed me to buy a license all of a sudden.

X-chat is free, you can compile it yourself but it is a pita on windows, that's why a trial version was made http://hexchat.github.io/shareware.html. I don't really understand how people get caught into downloading the trial version on windows though, Hexchat, Y-chat et al. are essentially just free pre-compiled binaries/patched versions of X-chat

You should consider using irssi or weechat with tmux/screen on a shell.

I personally use irssi in combination with tmux on my home server.

PS. Nice to see you on the forums jgr!
