For me starting out, PHP was like the next step. Learning HTML and the beginning of JavaScript was too easy. PHP was like level 2 of Op gohacker.

I would agree with that to a point. There's other traits to the hacking mentality but it all evolves around that curiosity. Then from there you pick up things like seeing everything as exploitable. But I'd also say that mentality forms to specific people as well.
